Artist Statement
I often ask myself in the late hours of the night, under the warm light of my studio lamp: is an illustrator a kaleidoscope of the art world? I am searching for the answer, like an entomologist with his net held high, collecting processes and aesthetics in a vast net of possibilities.
A Brief History
Matthew Barteluce attended Maryland Institute College of Art in 1999 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in 2003. Afterwards he worked in a multitude of artistic fields including architecture, sculpture, graphic design, writing and illustration.
He formed his own design consulting firm in 2006 and in 2008 was accepted into the Illustration as Visual Essay MFA program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He graduated in 2010 and currently works as a freelance artist for Brandbuzz, a division of Young & Rubicam Brands.
With a group of peers this fall he launched a new art and literature publication called Carrier Pigeon: Illustrated Fiction and Fine Art. It is a quarterly magazine and can be seen at www.carrierpigeonmag.com.
